I’m new to concealed carry and have been overwhelmed by the options for 9mm ammo. What do you guys recommend for self-defense rounds? I'd love to hear what performs well in terms of reliability and stopping power.

On the rare occasions when I carry a 9mm handgun, my ammo of choice is the Federal 9MS 147-grain Hi-Shok JHP "white box" load. This shoots to the fixed sights of my S&W 940 revolver, produces 900 fps from the 1-7/8" barrel, expands to 0.50"+ and stops in the 4th gallon water jug. It also performs well from my Beretta 92FS.

My normal EDC is a .38 snub, but when on the road in a higher risk environment I opt for the 940 / 92FS pairing. Works for me.

If I were to get into a gunfight with a hominid, I would use Hornady Critical Defense or Federal HST. For a quadruped that might want to attack me in the woods in WV, I like Winchester M1152 115 FMJ flat point at 1320 fps. It is a +P+ load. It would make a good skull splitter.

While totally agreeing on the Hornady Critical Defense, how proficient are you with your firearm? If you're terrible with target loads you won't be any better with self defense loads - probably worse. Many years ago I had a landlord with whom I'd target shoot with once a week. He had a guy break into his basement one night. My landlord placed 8 rounds of FMJ 9MM into the burglar - chest and stomach. Probably didn't need that many rounds but if someone is on PCP they won't feel it. Police couldn't believe how many rounds he landed before the guy was face down on the floor. How did he do it? Simple. He was a very good shot with lots and lots of practice. Best to rely on your skills than your ammo.
