Best Shotgun Options for Home Defense

I’m in the market for a shotgun for home defense and could use some advice from people who know their stuff. I’m weighing the pros and cons of 12-gauge versus 20-gauge. I get that 12-gauge packs more punch, but I’m hearing 20-gauge is easier to manage with less recoil, which sounds appealing for tight indoor spaces.

What should I prioritize when it comes to barrel length, stock options, or any specific features that are crucial for home defense?

I’m also interested in hearing about brands or models that have worked well for you, something that's straightforward and dependable.

And let’s talk training. I’ve handled shotguns before but never seriously. What kind of practice should I be doing to really be ready if I need to use it?

Mossberg 590A1 12-gauge with 18-inch barrel and heat shield. Use low-recoil buckshot.

Practice clearing rooms at a local range monthly to build speed.

I use a Remington 870 express 12 gaug with 18.5inch barrel, loaded with #4 buckshot for less wall penetration.

I think a lot depends on your situation. Age related limitations, your general strength and ability to move, that kind of thing.

There are low recoil rounds for 12 gauge as mentioned. See if you can try a few at a range to compare. If your body doesn't like it it will be difficult to practice with it.

There's nothing wrong with going to a 20 gauge, less recoil, effective on target at reasonable distances.

Probably best to choose something with an 18" barrel, pump or auto your choice. Run some rounds thru it to make sure it goes bang every time you pull the trigger. Regular field level ammo would work for this. Clean when done, dirty may not work when it's needed.

There's a lot of drills out there, check on youtube and see what is reasonable to you. You don't have to send 80 rounds downrange to practice, Also watch out you don't add 5 lbs. of gear to it, it shouldn't feel like your lifting an anvil. IT's too easy to get too many add ons that are of dubious real value. Maybe a light, keep it simple.
