I always assumed heavier bullets meant better penetration across the board. Then I actually looked at the data and saw how velocity, construction and sectional density all interact. A lighter bullet at higher velocity can outperform a heavy slow one depending on the scenario. The physics is complicated and simplified rules don't tell the whole story...
 
Weight alone doesn’t say much without factoring in velocity and bullet design. Stealth combined with those things is what really makes hunting ammo effective now.
 
Ballistics can be confusing, true. However those charts really can't help you until (1) you know what you what to shoot; and (2) know exactly where you what to hit the object. In another forum the 9mm battle has been raging. I've never seen anyone in Alaska packing a 9mm.
